Whether you're booking a written tarot reading or a video tarot reading, one of the most common misconceptions about Tarot is that the quality of a reading depends entirely on the reader. While an experienced reader can help with all kinds of guidance and insight, the question itself also plays a very important role. A question that is phrased and delivered well, will create a reading more meaningful and suitable for you.

So, if you're wondering how to ask a Tarot question, here is how:

Open questions are almost always better than closed questions. Asking closed yes/no questions such as "does my ex still think about me?", "will I get the job?" or "is this relationship meant to be?" to a conceptual method of divination most often defeats the purpose of that method. By conceptual I mean that Tarot comes with so many different layers and meanings; it's easy to quickly say that an Ace of Cups means a strong 'yes', when really, depending on the question, context, situation, its placement in the reading or even what a spirit or loved one may be communicating through it, it may also mean 'it's possible' or a loud, laughing 'not at all'. It's a bit like asking the rainbow, "are you red?" - the answers will vary based on a lot of factors. The rainbow is not completely red; but it is red in some parts, but at the same time, it's not red as a full concept as it is actually multicoloured; the yes/no answers are endless. Yes/no questions, on top of that, are just that, yes/no questions. If you go to a reader for a 1,000 word reading and only ask for yes or no answers, then you're most likely just going to get the same answer paraphrased until the reading reaches those 1,000 words.

Open-ended questions, on the other hand, allow the cards to really explore your situation. Asking "what are the energies surrounding this friendship?", "what insight is there on the direction I am taking with this job?", or "what can I learn from this relationship?" gives you information that you may not realise you need to know, and normally answers your yes/no question in a way that is a lot more detailed and insightful than simply saying yes or no.

Tarot is the most helpful when it can offer you genuine guidance. Letting the cards offer you new perspectives and insights allows for much better quality readings.

There is also a common trend in asking readers very vague questions with minimal background information in order to "test the cards" or "test the reader". However, the purpose of readings is to explore the questions you bring. It also saves you a lot of time to give extra information; For example, if you are asking about a relationship, it is much more helpful to explain the situation rather than expecting the cards to identify all the details independently. That way, the reading can actually focus on what you need to know about the relationship, rather than on trying to figure out things you already know.

Most importantly, remember: A tarot reading is not about surrendering your power or seeking certainty in every situation. Rather, it can offer a fresh perspective when life feels uncertain.

Sometimes the most valuable answer is not a prediction of the future, but a deeper understanding of yourself and of your path.
